Kate Farms Peptide

What is kate Farms Peptide?

Kate Farms Peptide is a completely organic, plant-based medical nutrition formula that you can drink or use for tube feeding.

It’s a popular product in the Kate Nutrition product lineup.

Other products in the Kate Farms lineup include:

Kate Farms also makes Standard and Peptide formulas designed for kids ages 1 to 13 years to promote weight gain and ease digestion.

Kate Farms Peptide comes in a 1.0 and 1.5 calorie per milliliter formula.

Each carton provides 325 mL, so the 1.0 formula provides 325 calories, and the 1.5 formula provides 500 calories — slightly more than the math.

The 1.5 formula is more calorie-dense, making it more suitable if you cannot tolerate as much liquid volume with a tube feed, have higher calorie needs, or struggle with a poor appetite.

Here’s the nutrition for each:

Fat13 grams25 grams
Carbs37 grams45 grams
Fiber5 grams3 grams

Both the 1.0 and 1.5 formulas provide similar amounts of 25 vitamins and minerals.

Each also provides a blend of beneficial plant compounds called polyphenols — which provide powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects — from extracts of fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

The formulas are free of major food allergens, including milk, eggs, fish, nuts, peanuts, soy, and gluten, and of artificial sweeteners, flavors, colors, and preservatives.

Kate Farms Peptide 1.0 and 1.5 come unflavored (Plain) — for tube feeding — or in Vanilla.

Both come in a reclosable carton that you must refrigerate and use within 24 hours of opening.

Summary

Kate Farms Peptide is an organic, plant-based nutrition formula that comes in two calorie densities — 1.0 and 1.5. You can drink it or use it for tube feeding.

Benefits and uses

Kate Farms Peptide is designed for people who have difficulties digesting whole proteins.

It provides hydrolyzed pea protein, meaning the protein has been broken down into its smaller components — peptides and amino acids.

You can think of protein as a string with hundreds to thousands of beads in which each bead is an amino acid.

Hydrolyzation “cuts” this string into smaller fragments called peptides and, depending on the degree of hydrolyzation, into individual amino acids.

This process essentially pre-digests the protein, doing what your body already must do before it can be absorbed.

However, not everyone can digest whole proteins due to inflammatory digestive conditions or procedures that affect the small intestine.

In these instances, a peptide formula like Kate Farms Peptide is beneficial since the body cannot effectively break whole proteins down, causing malabsorption.

Protein that is malabsorbed can lead to a protein deficiency and cause uncomfortable symptoms like bloating, diarrhea, stomach pain, and excessive gas.

Most hydrolyzed proteins come from milk — specifically whey — but Kate Farms Peptide uses peas, a high-quality, hypoallergenic protein source.

The formula also provides some fat as medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) which are more easily digested than their long-chain counterparts.

Summary

Providing easy-to-digest hydrolyzed pea protein, Kate Farms Peptide is useful for people who have difficulty digesting protein due to inflammatory digestive conditions or from certain surgeries that remove part of the small intestine.

Taste review

Kate Farms Peptide can be used for tube feeds but you can also drink it.

While you can drink the unflavored (Plain), I wouldn’t recommend it unless you use it to make a smoothie.

This limits your choice to Vanilla, which, in my opinion as a flavor, doesn’t mask the earthy and grassy taste of plant-based nutrition drinks as well as chocolate.

The Peptide 1.0 smelled like vanilla pudding and had a sweet vanilla bean taste with a mild-to-moderate grassy aftertaste.

Kate Farms Peptide Taste

I would expect Kate Farms Peptide 1.5 Vanilla to taste similar to the 1.0 formula, but the 1.5 might have a creamier texture since it provides twice the fat as the 1.0.

Hydrolyzed proteins — especially whey — are known to have a distinct bitter taste, but I didn’t notice this.

In fact, it has a similar smell, taste, and aftertaste to the Kate Farms Vanilla Nutrition Shake, which uses whole instead of hydrolyzed pea protein.

Masking the grassy, earthy, and sometimes chalky taste of pea protein isn’t easy, but Kate Farms does a decent job.

However, I would like to see chocolate as a future flavor offering for the Peptide formulas for variety and because I believe chocolate better masks the grassy aftertaste.

In either case, the formula is best consumed cold. Shake well before use and don’t forget to refrigerate and use within 24 hours.

If used for tube feeding, keep it at room temperature.

Summary

Kate Farms Peptide 1.0 Vanilla has a pleasant vanilla smell and taste with a mild grassy aftertaste.

The bottom line

Kate Farms Peptide is an organic, plant-based nutrition formula that you can drink or use for tube feedings.

It provides partially digested protein from peas, making it a good choice for people who struggle to digest protein due to inflammatory digestive conditions or surgeries that remove part of the small intestine.

Kate Farms Peptide 1.0 is better suited if you require fewer calories, while the 1.5 formula is ideal if you require more calories, better tolerate a lower volume of liquids with a tube feed, or if you have a poor appetite.
